- 2.1 c) compare two whole numbers between 0 and 999, using symbols (>, <, or =)
Objectives
- Students will be able to recognize scarcity.
- Students will be able to develop a way to share scarce goods.
- Students will be able to understand that because of scarcity, we must make economic choices.
- Students will be able to write number sentences to compare the number of people in relation to the number of resources.

- Marshmallows
- Chocolate bars
- Graham crackers
- S'mores activity sheet (see attached)
- Social Studies notebook
- Scarcity notes (see attached)
- Overhead projector
- Scarcity Search worksheet
- Sticky notes
Procedures
Introduction - (10 minutes)
- Students should be grouped in groups of four. Give each group the S'mores activity sheet. Discuss the problem. Students should realize that there is not enough ingredients to make s'mores for everyone.
- Discuss s'mores activity. Ask: What were your choices? Why do you think it's important to conserve our resources? Say: "In life, we can't always get what we want, similar to the activity. Scarcity is when there is not enough of what we want. Due to scarcity, people must make economic choices.
- Fill in scarcity notes with students. Show what their notebook should look like on overhead projector. Students should title the next clean page on notebook Scarcity and glue notes.
- Students work in groups on Scarcity Search worksheet. When they finish, ask them to write a number sentence for each problem on their worksheet. (e.g. #1. 2 > 1 two is greater than 1).
- Discuss worksheet. What makes a product scarce?
- With a partner discuss something that is scarce in the classroom. Write your answer on a sticky note and turn it in.
